She's Out of My League (R)

Mike:       Scott:

Scott: Tonight we are reviewing She's Out of My League, a movie about two completely differnt people who meet and hit it off.

What did you think Mike?

Mike: I laughed all the way through. With this type of movie, it could have been weak, but I liked it.

Good raunchy comedy.

What about you?

Scott: I laughed a lot as well.  It was funny pretty much all the way through.  It's not on par with the Wedding Crashers of the world, but it had some good laughs.  As for raunchy, I thought it was actually pretty tame compared to other recent movies.

Mike: You can't watch the shaving scene and say it was tame.

Scott: We didn't see anything.  You see more in There's Something About Mary.  It was a funny situation, but that scene wasn't raunchy.

Mike: Whatever you say.

Scott: That scene showed me that's it's cool to not be that close to my friends.

Mike: I like you, but I dont want to be that close either.

Scott: The movie starred Jay Baruchel as Kirk, a 'solid 5' who runs into Alice Eve as Molly - a hard 10.

He is cool around her because there is 0 chance he will end up with her.  When he finds out she actually likes him, he realizes he is in over his head.

Mike: I know Jay from several things, but loved him on the Judd Apatow show Undeclared.

Scott: I only really remember him from Knocked Up.

Mike: I don't think Ive ever seen Alice Eve before, but I definitely want to see her again.

Scott: No, I'm not familiar with her.  She has jaws like Kathy Ireland and looks a bit like Ali Larter.

Mike: Jaws like Kathy Ireland? Who says that? Either way, she is a pretty girl.

Scott: Jawline?  That's what it is.

Better than jowls.

Mike: Did I mention how much I liked Alice Eve? And I'm not just talking about her jawline.

Scott: Rounding out the cast are T.J. Miller as Stainer, Mike Vogel as Jack, Nate Torrence as Devon and Kyrsten Ritter as Patty.  An odd collection of folks.

Of course, Kirks family is full of odd people too.

Mike: I don't know anyone in this cast except for Baruchel and his Mom, Debra Jo Rupp, from That 70s Show.

It's okay though, because even though they are unknowns, the whole group is pretty funny.

Scott: Torrence was in Get Smart and Studio 60 and I remember him from those.  That was it for me... Of course Rupp, too.

It's nice to have actors who can play roles well. We needed people that could fit into the movie and that's what the folks did.

Mike: Now that you mention it I do remember Torrence from other things. He has some good comic timing.

Scott: He's got a funny vibe to him.

Miller reminded me of Seth Rogen a bit.  It may have been the hair.  He wasn't anywhere near as funny, just the hair I think.

Mike: Good best friend type, though.

Scott: Yes

I liked the interaction of Kirks family.  The inclusion of his ex and her boyfriend into all of his families activities was original.  You could really feel Kirks pain.

Mike: The scenes with the family are some of the funniest. They are kinda nuts. Kirks brothers fiance seems like she could be from Mechanicsville. I was pretty amused by the talk of a Nascar themed wedding. Looks like they have rednecks in Pittsburgh, too.

Scott: Rednecks that love hockey too, strange combination.

Mike: By the way, I am a Nascar redneck myself.

Another thing i liked about the movie is that there was no ulterior motive for the girl.

Scott: Yes and I liked the relationship between Kirk and Molly.  Even though they would never get together in real life, it felt good onscreen.

Mike: Normally the good looking girl strings the poor sap along, so he can do her homework or something.

This was a nice change.

Did I mention how much I liked Alice Eve?

Scott: Yes, it was the same formula as all romcoms in the end, but it had a slightly different variables in the middle.

Mike: Another comedy that takes place in Pittsburgh, though.

We recently had Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Adventureland. Its fine with me, though, since I grew up there. Looks like things have changed.

Scott: Yes, Pittsburgh... Isn't there slogan, "At least we aren't Detroit'?

Mike: Might be their slogan, but they do have great football and hockey teams.

Of course, we get to see the hockey and the baseball teams in the movie. There also might be a couple product placements...

Scott: Yes, there were a bunch of placements.

It was a bit much (this sentence brought to you by Snickers).

Scott: I'm not familiar with Director Jim Field Smith.  He did a good job of keeping a tight movie.

Not too many slow sections in the movie.  Good even pace.

Mike: Not familiar with Smith's work as a writer or director, but I think he did a nice job here.

Scott: Writers Sean Anders and John Morris have worked together a lot.  They are also working on the upcoming Hot Tub Time Machine, which I'm looking forward to watching.

Mike: Must see Hot Tub Time Machine! If only for the title.

Did I mention how much I liked Alice Eve?

Scott: How do you rate this?

Mike: I give this a movie a 3 overall and a 3.5 for romantic comedy. This one is more for the boys than the average romcom.

Mike: What do you rate it?

Scott: I give this a 3 overall and a 3 for romcom.  It was better than average, but not quite up with the big boys.
