Hot Rod (PG-13)

Mike:       Scott:

Scott: Tonight we are reviewing Hot Rod, the latest movie to come from an SNL regular.

What did you think Mike?

Mike: What a piece of junk! And it will not go .5 past light speed. I'm sure this is supposed to be hilarious but I laughed like twice.

How about you?

Scott: In a word, wow. While watching I asked myself how movies this bad can actually be made into movies. I laughed throughout, but it wasn't cause the movie was funny, but so dumb.

Mike: Actually, what I laughed at was the dumb physical humor that I had seen in the trailer. Unfortunately, that means I had already seen everything that was going to be funny, before I even saw the movie.

Scott: The movie stars Andy Samberg as the wanna stuntman Rod Kimble. He is so inept that the local kids make fun of him. That is the basis for a skit on SNL, or a short, not a movie.

Mike: As we know SNL loves to take skits and stretch them into movies and it is almost always a disaster. And this is no exception. The worst part is this is not even based on a popular skit.

This movie was trying very hard to be Napoleon Dynamite and it just did not have the same spark in any way.

Scott: I guess they tried to go 'bigger' than the stunts in Napoleon. They should have tried to be funny instead.

Mike: They definitely tried to be odd hoping it would be funny and it just turns out odd.

Scott: Isla Fisher is Kimble's love interest Denise. She was a lot of fun to watch in Wedding Crashers, in this she looked as confused as we were.

Mike: Pretty girl wasting our time and hers for a paycheck, I guess.

Scott: Speaking of which, see anyone else doing that?

Mike: Oh yes. I thought the really amazing thing about this cast is that somehow they talked Sissy Spacek into being in this jewel.

Maybe she is related to someone on the film?

Scott: It was sad to see her in this. It would have been better to see her working in a coal mine than in this.

As most SNL movies do, this cast was filled with SNL regulars and alumni. Jorma Taccone, Bill Hadder, and Chris Parnell.

Mike: Chris Parnell may have been the funniest guy in this thing and he was fired from SNL.

Hmm....

Scott: Nothing funny from anyone, or you are fired!

Mike: I want my Monday night back. I am so over this movie, that I don't even really want o spend a whole review on this.

If you watch the trailer and you think that this might be really cool or really bad. Go with your gut. It's really bad.

Scott: The director Akiva Schaffer is also an SNL person. He was/is a writer/director for SNL. Again, skits ok/movies bad.

Mike: Schaffer has basically only directed SNL episodes before this and I think he will be going right back to that.

Scott: The only thing good about the movie was the cheesy metal they played throughout the film. I liked that, but unfortunately, the tried to act and that ruined the music.

Mike: I love 80s music, but even that couldn't make me smile during this.

Scott: I would mention the other actors, but I think I will do them a favor and not.

What do you rate this Mike?

Mike: This movie rates the big 1 overall and a 1 for comedy. I think that says it all.

And you?

Scott: Pretty bad movie for me too, I give it 1 overall and a 1 for comedy. A movie so bad it made Benchwarmers look Oscar worthy.

Mike: Going to see Hot Rod can get you burned!
