Knocked Up (R)
Mike:

Scott:

Scott: Tonight we are reviewing Knocked Up
, a tale about what could happen after a drunken one-night stand.
What did you think Mike?
Mike: This movie is hilarious! I haven't laughed this much in awhile.
What did you think?
Scott: It was really funny, it reminded me of 40 Year Old Virgin
and Wedding Crashers
.
Mike: I think this is funnier than 40 Year Old Virgin. It did make me think of Wedding Crashers, Clerks 2
and Old School
. Yeah, it’s good like that.
I loved the writing and the cast. If you liked writer/director Judd Apatow
's TV shows Freaks and Geeks
and Undeclared
, you are in for a treat.
Scott: The premise of the movie is that Ben Stone (Seth Rogen
) and Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl
) get out one night, get drunk, have sex, and she gets pregnant. It's not something either wanted, but it's something they learn to accept, and then really look forward to.
A lot of what I found funny was the male interaction, something those other movies had a lot of.
Mike: Heigl and Rogen are definitely the stars, but there is a great supporting cast too.
I like Heigl on Grey's Anatomy
and I think she does a good job here.
Scott: I think this was both of their first times as leads in a movie and they were wonderful. I've never seen Heigl before. I don't watch Grey's Anatomy, but I thought she was great in this.
Mike: She is good and fun to watch. Very attractive.
Scott: Yeah, but just about every actress in Hollywood is attractive...
Mike: No, I mean Verrry attractive.
Scott: Mike, we all know you fall in love again with every movie.
Mike: Her character on Grey's is a former model. So its not just me.
Rogen is very funny. He had a part in 40 year Old Virgin and was a writer as well as actor on Undeclared.
Scott: This is the second time I've seen Rogen. I wasn't sure he would be able to carry the movie, but he did with ease.
Mike: If you haven't seen Freaks and Geeks or Undeclared, you must rent them on DVD. And of course both shows were cancelled
Why?
All together now....Because they were good!
Scott: I haven't seen them.
You mentioned the cast earlier, and you were right, it's a great cast. Lots of young rising talent throughout the cast.
Mike: Jason Segel
and Seth Rogen were on both shows. Jay Baruchel
was the star of Undeclared. Martin Starr
was the best friend Bill on Freaks.
These guys were all this good on the TV shows too.
Scott: I guess this movie was a reunion for those shows.
Mike: Jonah Hill was not either show, but was in the also hilarious Accepted.
"Ask me about my wiener!"
Scott: That was the second place we saw him. He also had a small, funny, part in 40 Year Old Virgin where he tried to buy something in the eBay store.
Segel I recognized from one of the hit sitcoms this year, How I Met Your Mother
.
Mike: Did you notice that except for Rogen, all the other guys character names were their real names? Jason, Martin, Jay and Jonah.
Scott: I noticed that too. I guess it makes it easier to answer to the character names if it is your name too.
Mike: James Franco
and Linda Cardenelli
both went into films after Freaks and Geeks. It's good to see all of these guys in movies too. I hope it’s the first of many. They make a great ensemble.
Scott: I just checked out the bartender's (Matthew McKane
) filmography on IMDB.
Even he has been in all of the movies and TV shows with the other guys. I guess they brought everyone from those shows back for this movie.
Mike: Bartender?
Scott: Yeah, the club bartender, the one you see for 2 minutes in the beginning of the movie.
Mike: Dr. Howard, the OBGYN, was played by Loudon Wainwright III
. He also played Jay Baruchel's dad on Undeclared.
It really is a reunion.
Watch those shows and you'll know why I'm going on about this.
Scott: On Alison Scott's side of the movie, there is her sister Debbie (Leslie Mann
) and her brother-in-law Pete (Paul Rudd
).
Mike: I didn't recognize Mann, but I've like Rudd in a number of things like Friends
and Night at the Museum
.
Scott: Writer/Director Judd Apatow did a really good job with this movie.
He directed 40 Year Old Virgin, and some Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks episodes.
Mike: It looks like Apatow has a number of projects in the works. I'm glad to see it, because this guy really does know what is funny.
Scott: He also is producing an upcoming film with Leslie Mann and Owen Wilson
. It seems like the same people keep popping up in certain types of movies.
Mike: The Saturday Night Live
connection continues too. Current cast members Kristen Wiig
and Bill Hader
both have small, funny parts.
I think every comedy we have seen this year has someone from SNL in it.
Scott: I don't watch SNL anymore, haven't for a while. I am not familiar with Wiig, she is great in this. Her scenes are really funny.
Mike: She is one of the best things about SNL.
I want to mention that this movie is rated R for language, sexual content and drug use, which may not be everybody’s cup of tea. It is mine, though.
Scott: And by language you mean a lot of the f-word.
Mike: Oh, and a lot of sexual language as well. You may not want to take Mom to this movie for her birthday.
Scott: So what do you rate this?
Mike: I give it a 1.
Yeah right. I give this a 4 overall and a 4 for comedy.
My one complaint is that like every comedy lately, it gets slow for about 20 minutes while things get serious and then back to being funny.
And you?
Scott: I also give it a 4 overall and a 4 for comedy. It was great to go to a movie and laugh a lot. Some of the jokes are so funny you will be talking about them the next day.
Mike: I know I missed jokes that were drowned out by laughter.
Scott: There were several times when that happened.
Mike: My wife couldn't make it, so I'm actually thinking about seeing it again soon.
Who knew getting knocked up could be so funny?
