The Man (PG-13)

Mike:       Scott:

Scott: Tonight we are reviewing The Man. A movie about a straight laced white dental products salesman, who gets mixed up with a tough renegade black cop. Hilarity ensues...

What did you think Mike?

Mike: I liked it. No deep plot, but pretty funny. It's not the &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Wedding Crashers, but I found it entertaining.

How about you?

Scott: It was there. If that means anything. I really didn't laugh in the movie, which as a comedy, I should have done. I did smile every so often. The crowd seemed to like it though.

Mike: The crowd did seem to enjoy it.

The story is something we've seen before, but it had its laugh-out-loud moments.

Scott: I am going to commit movie sin here. I think Samuel L. Jackson, who played the tough Special Agent Derrick Vann, is getting a bit old. He keeps playing the same parts, and he has stopped bringing his A game to these roles.

Mike: Oh no you didn't...

Samuel L. is the man. (pun intended). In fact, I liked that he was kinda spoofing his Jules character from &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Pulp Fiction. He even says, "that's a tasty burger".

Scott: Still, I would like to see something different. His character in &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Star Wars was one of the few in that movie I liked, and he didn't even cuss in that.

Mike: Yeah, but they even made the cussing kinda funny in this movie.

FuCryingoutloud!

Scott: That was good. I liked that part.

Mike: I like the fact that Samuel played 4 different roles in the 4 movies he's been in this year: &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Coach Carter, &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>xXx, &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Star Wars and now this movie.

Scott: In &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>xXx and this movie he was a tough law enforcement guy, in &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Star Wars he was a tough, but wise, law enforcement guy and &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Coach Carter was a tough, and stern, basketball coach. Yeah, I can see a difference there.

Mike: I know you are not comparing Mace Windu with Augustus Gibbons or Coach Ken Carter.

Scott: Eugene Levy played Andy Fidler, the dental salesman from Wisconsin. Apparently, he is wanted in Turkey for carpet stealing or something.

Mike: Eugene makes me laugh. He is definitely the same nervous nebbish he is in other movies, like &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>American Pie, but he's funny. I found myself laughing, even when it was against my better judgment.

Scott: It was a bit over-played. There were a few scenes were the script must have read - 'do things with your eyes and eyebrows'.

Mike: Yeah, but what eyebrows!

I say that Jackson and Levy are the highlights of the movie.

Scott: You are right there; they are the best this movie has to offer. Unfortunately, they weren't enough to carry the movie

Mike: Speak for yourself. I think they made a great team, and you should agree, because you are my bitch. Or am I yours?

Scott: We are each other's bitches.

Mike: That will make much more sense to people once they have seen the movie.

Scott: Yes, or, have seen the previews... That part would have been funny, had I not seen the trailers for the movie.

Mike: The villain, Joey, looked like a Sting wanabee to me and his character didn't strike me as anything special.

Scott: I will disagree with you on Luke Goss, who played Joey. I thought he was good. I don't know, I thought he was a slick bad guy. Tough and dumb, but also tollerant and without spittle.

Mike: Spittle?

Scott: Lately the movies we have seen have had the bad guys doing a lot of spray talk.

Mike: Oh, unexpected personal shower, got you.

I think part of why I liked it more than you is that you truly have to appreciate a good fart joke. There are a number of juvenile bodily function jokes, but I am not too proud to admit that I fall for them every time.

Scott: I like them too, but I saw them coming. I don't like movies that foreshadow fart jokes. Maybe I wasn't in a comedy mood tonight.

Mike: No, maybe you are just being adult about this. This movie definitely appealed to the juvenile sense of humor in me.

Scott: That can't be it, I will deny that forever. I am immature and juvenile.

Mike: But sometimes you have to laugh because you can't help it.

Scott: I did laugh a couple times, but it was very infrequent

Mike: Well this movie was definitely an improvement over &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Underclassman. I couldn't even force a laugh out for that one.

Scott: This movie was just too tired, to replayed, too unoriginal. In &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Underclassman I remarked about the tough police Captain. Well, the tough police Captain was in this too. Who would have guessed the 'badge and gun get taken away scene'?

Mike: This movie doesn't rate up with the great buddy comedies like &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>48 Hours, &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Rush Hour, or even &tag=wwwrichmond09-20&index=dvd&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325' target='_blank' id='movie'>Shanghai Noon, but I found quite a few things to like and laugh about.

I'm not even going to comment on the plot. But then again, I didn't go into this expecting one.

This is definitely more comedy and action, than thriller or crime drama.

Scott: So what do you rate this?

Mike: Overall, I will give this a 2 out of 5 with a 3 out of 5 for buddy comedy. I think it is a DVD renter.

And you?

Scott: I give it a 1.5 out of 5 overall and a 1 out of 5 for buddy comedy. I would wait for cable on this. It will do well at the box office the first week, but I think it will sink quickly thereafter.

Mike: I agree that it's going to do well its first week.

Scott: For this movie I won't say FuCryingoutloud!, but I will say Fogettaboutit!
